Charcoal Grill Reviews:
- Blackstone 3-in-1 Kabob Charcoal Grill – Barbecue – Smoker – With Automatic Rotisserie – 11 custom heavy-duty skewers included
The number 1 spot on our charcoal grill reviews gets occupied by Blackstone 3-in-1 grill-barbecue-smoker. Why so? Because for quite a convenient price, you get everything that you may need for a nice summer party!
So what’s so remarkable about this product that makes it ideal for out-of-town trips? Firstly, it comes with a thermometer, which allows you to easily monitor the temperature within the grill by adjusting the amount of coal. Secondly, it comes with 11 23-inch quality skewers, meaning that this device is ready for barbecue out of the box! Lastly, this grill features a rotisserie motor, which allows you to rotate the skewers with the meat on them for even and consistent cooking.
Blackstone 3-in-1 grill-barbecue-smoker comes with a coal grate, as well as 3 small cooking grates. You could remove one of the grates to put skewers instead to allow for the cooking of several types of food at once!
This grill is also equipped with adjustable air vents, which can help you with adjusting the temperature level within to allow you to get the required results. Another thing that’s adjustable is the charcoal height, which will allow you to easily switch between grilling and barbecuing.
For added convenience, Blackstone 3-in-1 grill-barbecue-smoker is equipped with a side table, as well as small shelf space at the bottom. Two of the four legs of the grill have wheels to make transporting it easier: after all, the grill weighs about 100 pounds! And let’s also not forget about the ash bin, which makes cleaning the grill a little bit easier.
What we and some users don’t like is the low positioning of the side table. Apart from that, the ash bin is quite narrow, which could be a limiting factor during cleaning.
- 3-in-1 grill, barbecue, and smoker.
- Inbuilt thermometer for precise temperature control.
- Adjustable vents for air flow regulation.
- Adjustable charcoal height.
- Equipped with a rotisserie motor.
- Comes with 11 quality skewers.
- Has a pair of wheels to facilitate transport.
- Small ash bin.
- The side table is quite low.
- Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Kettleman Charcoal Grill, 22.5 Inch
Char-Broil Kettleman Charcoal Grill is one of the two kettle grills we have today. But what does make this one worth the second spot? Well, Char-Broil grill has a couple of features that the other one does not!
The lid of the Char-Broil Kettleman grill is equipped with a thermometer gauge, which, as you already know, allows you to quickly evaluate whether or not you need to add coal into the grill. Besides, the lid features an adjustable air vent that can be closed off if necessary.
The Kettleman also has 360-degree air inlet for balanced air delivery and even heating. However, those air inlets can’t be closed off to allow you to put out the charcoal, so you might end up wasting some of it while waiting for it to go out.
The most noteworthy feature of Char-Broil Kettleman grill is its TRU-InfraRed Cooking System. It basically prevents flare-ups that may char the food and make it less juicy. Apart from that, it ensures that the heat of the grill is spread evenly throughout the cooking grate for consistent cooking.
Speaking of the cooking grate, it is another remarkable component of this grill. Its design is what partly contributes to the prevention of flare-ups, as well as doesn’t allow any food to fall through. However, while the design, on one hand, prevents fat from falling through, it makes the grate get dirty much more quickly, which in its turn makes the cleaning harder.
Another issue with the cooking grate is that the space between it and the coal grate is quite small, making fitting in large charcoal pretty much impossible.
Char-Broil Kettleman Charcoal Grill has a removable slide-in ash pan that captures ash. After you are done, you only need to remove the pan to get rid of the ash.
- Large, 360 sq. in. cooking surface.
- Equipped with a temperature gauge.
- Infrared cooking system for more efficient and even cooking.
- Removable ash bowl for easier cleaning.
- Adjustable air ventilation.
- No-fall-through cooking grate.
- Has 360-degree air inlet.
- Has a bottom wire shelf.
- 10-year warranty.
- The grate is difficult to clean.
- The space between the cooking and coal grates is small.
- The air intakes can’t be shut off.
- Weber 741001 Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill
The other kettle grill we mentioned in the previous review is Weber 741001 Original Kettle 22-inch grill. This one is a simpler model, but this doesn’t mean that it is worse!
In terms of cooking surface, this grill has slightly more than the Kettleman: 363 against 360 square inches. This isn’t much of a difference, but it still is nice to see such a large cooking area in a cheaper grill.
What’s undeniably better with this grill is that you can completely cut off the air thanks to the adjustable vent on the lid. Besides, the porcelain-enamelled lid and bowl allow for steady temperature for consistent cooking. Too bad that this grill doesn’t have any temperature gauges, making managing the heat level much more difficult.
This grill doesn’t have the advanced infrared cooking system, but this allows for larger space between the cooking and coal grates. Both of the grates withstand heat greatly, which is obviously highly important with grills.
An interesting feature Weber 22-inch charcoal grill has is the aluminized-steel one-touch cleaning system that employs three paddles within the grill to facilitate removing the ash. The bottom aluminium ashtray then catches the ash for easy disposal. But keep in mind that the tray isn’t removable, meaning that you will have to literally shovel out the ash.
Just like the previous grill, Weber grill has a bottom wire shelf to keep the utensils at hand. Besides, it is equipped with a pair of wheels for easy transport.
- 363 sq. inches of cooking surface.
- Has an ashtray for easier cleaning.
- Heat-resistant top handle.
- Equipped with a simple to use cleaning system.
- Adjustable top vent system.
- Has a bottom wire shelf.
- 10-year warranty.
- The ash catcher isn’t removable.
- Difficult to precisely control temperature with.
- Charcoal Grill Barbecue Tool Sets Portable Premium BBQ Grill for Outdoor Campers Travel Park Beach
Now comes the first of the three portable grills on our charcoal grill reviews! We put Bartonisen grill and barbecue on the fourth spot because it is a little bit more versatile than the other portable grills that we will examine shortly. It is a very simple yet such an interesting grill!
Bartonisen charcoal grill and barbecue feature a portable suitcase-like design when folded, which allows for exceptionally easy and convenient carry. Apart from that, this grill takes so little space when folded thanks to its dimensions of 11 x 18 x 3 (W x L x H) inches. When cooking, you need to engage the legs for the grill to securely stand on the ground.
What’s quite remarkable about this grill is that it has three height levels for the cooking grate. On the lowest level, you could get strong heat for grilling, while the higher levels would be perfectly suitable for barbecuing. However, this grill can’t do smoking because it doesn’t have any kind of lid.
Bartonisen also kindly included a BBQ shovel and fork with this grill, which will surely come in handy as a spare set or in case you don’t have your own.
Overall, this grill and barbecue set will be ideal for 3 – 5-people BBQ gatherings, and if you don’t need to be able to smoke the meat.
- 3 height levels for the cooking grate.
- Easy to carry.
- Closable design and foldable legs for convenient storage.
- Comes with a BBQ fork and shovel.
- 1-year warranty.
- Can’t smoke.
- YANXUS Portable Charcoal Grill Outdoor thickened Stainless Steel Charcoal Grill
YANXUS grill is a yet another portable grill on our reviews! We feel that YANXUS grill isn’t as versatile as the Bartonisen portable grill because it doesn’t have grate level adjustment, though there are other features that may make up for the difference.
The main distinguishing feature of this grill is that it can be covered with a lid for smoking, which isn’t the case for the other portable grills. The lid features adjustable air dampers to help easily regulate temperature. This grill doesn’t have a temperature gauge, but it isn’t really a downside because portable grills typically don’t have them anyway. The side vent for adjusting the fire is worth a mention as well.
The lid features a heat-resistant handle for convenient transport. The cooking tray features double side handles. Besides, YANXUS charcoal grill is equipped with foldable bottom legs that can be engaged when cooking and folded for carrying and storage.
All in all, because of its compactness, YANXUS charcoal grill will be especially suitable for small family gatherings. This grill can accommodate about 3 – 4 burgers at once, meaning that it won’t be able to satisfy the demands of large parties very well.
A noticeable downside of this grill is that its lid has small holes, which make it pretty much impossible for you to put out the fire by cutting off the oxygen supply of the fire as-is.
- Portable design.
- Adjustable top dampers.
- Made from stainless steel.
- Side vent for firepower regulation.
- Heat-resistant handle.
- Not suitable for large gatherings.
- The air flow can’t be cut off completely due to small holes in the lid.
- Barbecue Charcoal Grill Stainless Steel Folding Portable Lightweight BBQ Tools for Outdoor Cooking Camping Hiking Picnics Tailgating Backpacking (Small)
And the last grill on our charcoal grill reviews is Uten Barbecue Charcoal Grill. We put this one at the number 6 spot because it is the simplest grill we examined, but this doesn’t mean that it is the worst!
Uten grill will be ideal for 3 – 5 people parties that need quick setup. Like the Bartonisen grill, this grill has a suitcase-like portable design, though there is no lid on the grill. This grill features a handle and retractable legs for convenient storage and transport.
This grill doesn’t have height levels for the grates, but it comes with large- and small-mesh grates to better suit your cooking requirements. Plus, Uten nicely included a BBQ tong with the grill.
Uten Barbecue Charcoal Grill is equipped with bottom air vents to allow for better air circulation to keep the charcoal fired up. However, the grill doesn’t have any covers to close the vents with, so you will need to improvise in case you need it.
Some users complained about the durability of the cooking grates, which tend to melt during use. Besides, the material this grill is made from rusts pretty easily, so it won’t be the best choice if you plan to hold a family party in a humid area.
All in all, Uten grill will be a nice choice if you need an affordable and easy to use the grill for weekend barbecue.
- Portable and lightweight.
- Easy to store and carry.
- Equipped with bottom vents for better charcoal burning.
- Comes with small- and large-mesh grates, as well as a BBQ tong.
- The cooking grates aren’t very durable.
- Rusts easily in humid environments.
- Not suitable for smoking.
Things to look for when buying charcoal grills
Types of a charcoal grill
There are two main types of grills – charcoal and gas – which operate on either charcoal or gas, as their names imply. Each of the types has its own subtypes, but we are now going to focus exclusively on charcoal grills. There are four main types of charcoal grills: barrel, kettle, kamado, and portable.
Barrel grills are the biggest charcoal grills out there, which makes them ideal for large gatherings. Apart from the size, barrel grills have advantages in terms of their features as they often have small conveniences that other types don’t have. Those features include side tables, coal doors, adjustable coal grates, and more.
Due to their size, barrel grills use much more charcoal than other types because to ensure prolonged cooking, you need to build a bed of a lot of coal in barrel grills.
Barrel grills typically cost $100 – 300.
Kettle grills are smaller than barrel grills, but their charcoal bed is actually deeper, which allows for better searing or prolonged cooking with less charcoal expense. On the other hand, kettle grills hold less food than barrel grills. Besides, the three-leg design makes them not as sturdy as barrel grills.
In terms of price, kettle grills mostly cost between $80 and $250.
Kamado grills are typically designed with airtight, allowing for better temperature control. Similar to kettle grills, the deep and narrow charcoal bed makes kamado grills great for searing or prolonged cooking. Because kamado grills are specifically designed for several-hour long cooking with no charcoal addition, they are quite good for barbecue and smoking, apart from grilling.
As for the downsides, kamado grills are much more expensive than other types, typically costing between $200 and $2,000.
Portable grills are the cheapest and smallest charcoal grills you can find. They are ideal for small family gatherings. Their easiness of use also makes them perfect for regular grilling. The main advantage of portable grills is that they are exceptionally easy to store and transport thanks to their size. On the other hand, portable grills don’t have the features of the other types. Typically, the most you can get with a portable grill is adjustable air vents.
Portable grills typically cost under $100.
The durability of a charcoal grill is quite important. The material grills are made from is typically not very thick in order to not make them excessively heavy. You should pay close attention to the build anyway because it will dictate the grill’s longevity. Since it’s not really possible to evaluate the level of the grill’s durability, the best bet would be to read through user reviews to see if the grill has issues with its build. Pay attention to the quality of the charcoal and cooking grates, as well as the rust resistance of the grill in particular.
Size and shape
Both size and shape are quite important with grills. Larger charcoal grills allow you to cook more food at once, which is what you want to be looking for if you are planning a large family gathering.
In terms of the shape, the depth of the charcoal bed is particularly important as it determines whether or not you will be able to more flexibly adjust the coal level for searing and prolonged cooking.
Height adjustment for coal and cooking grates
This is a handy feature that you may want to have with your charcoal grill. Grills typically have one or the other as they both have the same purpose: they allow you to adjust the amount of heat the food gets. If you, for example, elevate the charcoal grate, the food will be heat up much better, and vice versa. The concept is the same with cooking grates, but it is the other way around: you lower the grates for more heat and raise them for longer cooking.
Some charcoal grills come with handle-operated height adjustment, as it was with Blackstone 3-in-1 grill, while the others simply have different height levels for the cooking grates to be installed at like it was with Bartonisen grill.
A temperature gauge is a very nice tool to have with a charcoal grill. It allows you to precisely know whether the heat from the coals is too high or low, which will help you to act accordingly. If you need to know the precise temperature within the grill, a temperature gauge would come in handy.
Ash catchers or trays catch the charcoal ash, allowing you to then easily dispose of it. The main thing you want to be looking for with ashtrays is whether or not they are removable. If not, you will have a harder time disposing of the ash.
Sometimes, you may need to add some charcoal to increase or maintain the heat level. It would be the easiest to do with a coal door as it allows you to add charcoal without removing the food grate from the grill.
Vents or dampers
Vents or dampers are designed to help you regulate the air circulation within the grill. If you want more fire, you would need to increase the air circulation, whereas if you want consistent fire, you would need to limit the air inflow. Some charcoal grills allow you to completely close off air inflow, which allows you to quickly put out the coal.
Shelves and side tables
Not very necessary, but certainly handy. In case you want to be able to keep a lot of items on hand, shelves or/and side tables would be absolutely necessary. Look for an according grill if that’s what you need.
Charcoal grills, except for portable ones, typically come with wheels for easier transportation. This definitely is a thing you should be looking for because without wheels, it would be very difficult to move the heavy grill around.
Pretty much all grills can be used for barbecue if you adjust the coal level. But not all of them can be used for smoking. If you want to smoke the meat, you would need a charcoal grill with a closable top. Fortunately, finding such a grill is quite easy as pretty much every kind of grill can smoke meat. Some portable grills are an exception though, as we could have seen from the example of Uten and Bartonisen grills.
